Sri Lankan Lunu Miris Recipe

Lunu miris: A very popular and very tasty condiment in Sri Lanka. If you are a spicy lover, this is must for your everyday meal. The taste is awesome when accompany this Lunu Miris with egg hoppers, Coconut Roti, Milk Rice and even with rice. You will surely love this simple little recipe. This can literally make your mouth watering.


  • Dried Red Chilies – 100g
  • Red Onions – 100g
  • Maldive Fish – 1 ½ TBS (Optional)
  • Lemon Juice – ½ TSP
  • Salt to Taste


  • Peel onions and keep aside
  • Grind dried red chilies
  • Pound red onions well, using a little mortar and pestle
  • Mix red chilies and salt to the onion mixture and pound again until they mix well
  • Pounding the ingredients more will increase the taste
  • When it becomes a paste, put this into a dish and mix lemon juice
  • Taste it and adjust salt and lemon juice
  • You can improve taste by adding maldive fish and few tomato slices
  • This can be used for 2-3 days if stored in a refrigerator
